Why Raven Bread Exists
The belief that a single moment of crisis shouldn't cost someone their home.
Our mission
Raven Bread provides one-time emergency financial assistance to people in Salt Lake City who are on the verge of losing their housing. We pay past-due rent, overdue utility bills, and other immediate costs that stand between a family and homelessness.
We know that homelessness can be the result of a single bad month: a medical bill, a lost shift, a car repair that couldn't wait. Our job is to be there in that month.
How it started
Raven Bread was founded by Salt Lake City residents who want to help individuals and families facing a crisis. The name comes from the biblical story of Elijah in the wilderness — fed by ravens when he had nothing.
What started as a personal commitment to help one person at a time has grown into a structured program connecting donors who want to give to a specific need with applicants who have that exact need.
How funds are used
One hundred percent of every donation goes directly to aid recipients. We cover:
Past-due rent
Payments made directly to landlords to prevent eviction.
Utility shutoffs
Electric, gas, and water bills to keep essential services on.
Mortgage arrears
Overdue mortgage payments for homeowners facing foreclosure.
Other housing costs
Storage fees, moving costs, or other expenses directly tied to keeping or regaining stable housing.
Who we are
Raven Bread believes that overhead should be volunteer so that every dollar reaches someone in need.
